Anna Arazi@The International Stretto Piano Festival
May 15, 2021 2:30PM EDT
Exquisite music by Verdina Shlonsky, Angela Slater and Adam Berndt (two world premières!!!)
The recital is performed on an ergonomically scaled keyboard installed in a Steinway Grand piano at the Revelation gallery in Greenwich village, NYC. I'd like to thank the brilliant Hannah Reimann, the organizer of the festival and the owner of the piano, for letting me play her amazing instrument!

Q&A
Ergonomically scaled piano keyboards - what are these? -> These are piano keyboards with slightly narrower keys.
Who does need them? -> People with a hand span is smaller than 8.5 inch from thumb to pinky (grab a ruler and measure your hand now!)
Are there many people with small hands? -> About 87% of women and 24% of men have hand span smaller than 8.5 inch
Where can I learn more about these keyboards? -> Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards
Playing a keyboard that is bigger than what you need leads to overuse injuries, extended practice time, suboptimal sight reading among others. One of the biggest problem is the self-esteem issue: many smaller-handed pianists blame themselves for not being talented enough, or being lazy, while in fact they just need a different size of the keyboard.
Ergonomics are all around us, but only on the piano we still try to run a marathon in one-size-fits-all shoes. Time for change!

February 15, 2016 Lecture and Recital at the Conference of Israel Musicological Society (Tel Aviv)
Lecture about Verdina Shlonsky's life and music gathered a few dozens of listeners, and the performance of the Pages from the Diary at the main concert hall of the Levinsky College exposed literally all the participants of the event to Shlonsky's unique musical world. This was my great pleasure and honor to be part of this event. Many thanks to the organizers of the event Rotem Luz and Rivka Elkoshi.

August 11, 2015 Lecture-Recital and teaching at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute
during which I premiered Ketty Nez's new composition 'chase' and performed Verdina Shlonsky "Pages from the Diary". Guidance through this new music tremendously helped my audience to comprehend and enjoy it. I invited the listeners to join me at the piano, and to follow the visual image of 'chase', which was done by a dozen of brave and curious young pianists (see the picture).

I had a life-changing experience performing on a narrower Steinbuhler DS 6.0 keyboard (15/16 size of a standard keyboard). The lack of tension and a total comfort were absolutely priceless!
